How To Plan Your First China Trip

Planning China for the first time can feel huge, but the route becomes manageable once you choose a travel style and limit the number of regions.

1. Choose Your Main Theme

  • Classic history: Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai.
  • Food: Shanghai, Xi’an, Chengdu, Guangzhou.
  • Nature: Guilin/Yangshuo, Zhangjiajie, Yunnan, Huangshan.
  • Modern cities: Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing.

2. Do Not Overpack The Map

For 7 days, pick 2 or 3 stops. For 10 days, 3 or 4 stops. For 14 days, 4 or 5 stops with at least one slower place.

3. Build Around Transport

High-speed rail is excellent between many major cities. Flights work better for long distances or when mountains and border regions are involved.

4. Prepare The Practical Tools

Before departure, prepare translation, maps, payment, hotel addresses in Chinese, train booking details, and backup screenshots.

Next step: compare sample routes on the Itineraries page.
