Travel Essentials

China Travel Essentials

This checklist covers the practical details travelers often discover too late. Always confirm visa, transit, health, and entry rules with official sources before booking because policies can change.

Before You Go

  • Check passport validity, visa needs, transit rules, and hotel registration requirements.
  • Download offline translation, maps, airline, train, and hotel apps before departure.
  • Prepare more than one payment method and keep a backup physical card.
  • Save hotel names and addresses in Chinese characters for taxis and station staff.
  • Book major attractions in advance during weekends and Chinese public holidays.

Getting Around

  • High-speed rail: best for Beijing-Xi’an, Shanghai-Suzhou-Hangzhou, Guangzhou-Shenzhen, and many regional routes.
  • Flights: useful for long jumps like Beijing to Yunnan, Chengdu to Guilin, or Shanghai to western China.
  • Metro systems: clean, efficient, and usually the easiest way to move inside major cities.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: convenient, but keep Chinese addresses ready.

Money, Internet & Communication

  • Set up mobile payment before travel where possible, and keep cash/card backup for emergencies.
  • Use an eSIM or local SIM plan that fits your device and route.
  • Keep screenshots of bookings, train tickets, hotel addresses, and emergency contacts.
  • Learn a few phrases: hello, thank you, this one, no spice, train station, hotel, and receipt.

Travel Etiquette

  • Queue at transport gates and follow station security checks.
  • Ask before photographing people closely, especially in villages, temples, and markets.
  • Carry tissues and hand sanitizer for long sightseeing days.
  • Respect temple spaces, local signs, and photography restrictions.
