China Destinations

China is easier to plan when you group destinations by travel style. Use this page to decide what belongs in your first route and what can wait for a second trip.

Best For First-Time Visitors

  • Beijing: Forbidden City, Great Wall, hutongs, imperial parks, roast duck, and strong first-time orientation.
  • Xi’an: Terracotta Warriors, city wall, Muslim Quarter, noodles, and Tang dynasty history.
  • Shanghai: skyline, art districts, French Concession streets, museums, day trips to Suzhou or Hangzhou.
  • Chengdu: pandas, teahouses, Sichuan food, relaxed neighborhoods, and access to western Sichuan.

Nature & Scenery

  • Guilin and Yangshuo: karst mountains, rivers, cycling routes, bamboo rafting, countryside stays.
  • Zhangjiajie: dramatic sandstone pillars, glass bridges, forest park walks, photography.
  • Yunnan: Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, Shangri-La, ethnic cultures, mountain scenery.
  • Huangshan: granite peaks, hot springs, ancient Huizhou villages, sunrise viewpoints.

City Breaks & Culture

  • Hangzhou: West Lake, tea villages, temples, elegant weekend pace.
  • Suzhou: classical gardens, canals, silk culture, easy train ride from Shanghai.
  • Guangzhou: Cantonese food, dim sum, trade history, access to Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
  • Chongqing: spicy hotpot, layered city views, river cruises, cyberpunk night scenes.

For most first trips, choose 2 to 4 regions instead of trying to cover the whole country. China rewards a little breathing room.
